Break the Loop

Catch a mistake before it becomes three

A mistake does not have to cost you the next five minutes. Catch the loop and reset fast.

You already know the feeling: you miss the tackle, blow the first touch, get pulled for a sub, and the next few minutes do not go much better either. That is the loop: trigger, protective strategy, consequence, repeat. It is not a talent problem or a toughness problem, it is a pattern, and a pattern is a habit, not a truth.

The same pattern loops on autopilot inside your mind, until you catch it. The moment you see it (the green step), you get to choose a new one and break the cycle.

The Science

One mistake rarely stays one mistake. A trigger sets off a protective strategy, tightening up, overthinking, checking out, and that strategy is what actually costs you the next few reps, not the original mistake itself.

The Practice

The fix is not to stop making mistakes. It is to shrink the time between the mistake and getting your mind back, on purpose, every time.

Try It Today

Rehearse it before you need it: close your eyes, picture the mistake that usually gets you, let it land, then run your reset. Two minutes before every practice, for two weeks.

How to Use Them

  1. 1Name it. Silently or out loud: that happened. No story yet, just the fact.
  2. 2One long exhale, longer than your inhale, on purpose. This is the physical off switch for the loop.
  3. 3Say your reset word, one word chosen ahead of time that means back to now.
  4. 4Pick the very next task. Not the mistake, not the last five minutes. The literal next thing in front of you.
