Fuel · Eating Across a Tournament

Tournaments · fuel the whole day, not one meal

Top off all day so you still have legs in the last game.

Fueling across a tournament is the most underrated skill in youth sports, and under-fueling is the most common mistake. A long day of several games burns a huge amount of energy, and you cannot make it up with one meal. You fuel continuously, topping off all day so you are not empty by the last game.

Between games, match the food to the time you have. Right after a game, start with quick carbs and fluid to begin refilling. If you have two to three hours until the next one, add a real meal with protein. If you only have an hour, keep it light and mostly carb so it clears your stomach, a banana, a rice cake with honey, a smoothie.

Keep sipping water and salt all day, not just at games. In the heat especially, dehydration sneaks up across a long day and quietly tanks your performance and your focus by the afternoon.

The trap to avoid: nerves and heat kill appetite, so many athletes barely eat all day and then wonder why they fall apart in the final game. You may have to fuel on schedule even when you are not hungry. Small, frequent, familiar foods win. Fuel the whole day, and you will still have legs when everyone else is running on empty.

The Science

Between games you are racing to replace muscle glycogen before the next kickoff. Glycogen refills fastest in the first hour or two after exercise, so starting immediately with carbohydrate, and adding protein, is what gives you legs in the later games instead of a slow fade. Sweat also lowers your blood volume, so steady fluid and sodium keep your output and your focus from dropping through the afternoon.

Try It Today

Pack a cooler with a meal plus grab-and-go carbs (fruit, rice cakes, pretzels, a smoothie) and enough water and electrolytes for the whole day. Fuel a little after every game, not just at lunch.

How to Use Them

  1. 1After each game: quick carbs plus fluid right away.
  2. 22 to 3 hrs before the next: a real meal with protein and carbs.
  3. 3Under 1 hr before the next: light and mostly carb.
  4. 4All day: sip water plus salt, do not wait until you are thirsty.
  5. 5Eat on schedule even if the nerves kill your appetite.
