Water alone isn't hydration, minerals are the missing half.
Here is what almost nobody teaches young athletes: drinking plain water is not the same as being hydrated. Water needs minerals, the electrolytes sodium, potassium, magnesium, and chloride, to actually move into your cells and stay there. Drink a large amount of plain water with no minerals and you can dilute your system and pee most of it straight back out, sometimes feeling flatter, crampier, and foggier, not better.
The deeper point is this: your body cannot make minerals. Some vitamins the body can build or convert, but minerals are elements, they come out of rock and soil, and the only way to get them is from the outside, through the food you eat and the water you drink. That is exactly what the word essential means in nutrition: the body cannot produce it and has to take it in. Plants pull minerals up from the soil, animals eat the plants, and you eat both. If that chain runs short on minerals, so do you.
And minerals run the body. Sodium and potassium fire every muscle contraction and nerve signal, and their balance is what draws water into your cells. Magnesium is used in hundreds of processes including muscle relaxation and sleep, which is why running low shows up as cramps, twitches, and restless nights. Calcium builds bone and also triggers muscle contraction. Iron carries oxygen in the blood, and zinc runs immunity and repair. These are not optional extras, they are the electrical and structural system the whole body operates on.
The modern problem is that a lot of people are quietly under-mineralized. Industrial farming has measurably lowered the mineral content of soils over the last century, ultra-processed foods have the minerals stripped out, and heavily filtered water such as reverse osmosis removes them from what you drink. So an athlete can eat and drink plenty and still run low.
Closing the gap is simple. Eat mineral-dense whole foods: leafy greens, fruit, nuts and seeds, a little quality sea salt, and mineral-rich things like nettle tea. On big sweaty days, add electrolytes to your water, a pinch of good salt plus potassium, or trace-mineral drops, rather than sugary neon sports drinks. Hydration is never water alone. It is water plus minerals, working together.
