Eat to Your Constitution

There is no one diet, there is your diet.

There is no one perfect diet, there is the one that is right for you. Two people can eat the identical meal, and one feels powered up while the other feels heavy and foggy. That is not willpower, it is constitution: your particular makeup, the way your body digests, warms, cools, and responds. Traditional medicine has read the body this way for thousands of years.

In Ayurveda, the traditional medicine of India, your constitution is described as three doshas: vata (air, light and dry), pitta (fire, hot and sharp), and kapha (earth, heavy and steady). You eat to balance whichever runs strong in you. Traditional Chinese medicine reads the same body as warm or cool, damp or dry, and matches food to bring it back to center: cooling, hydrating foods for someone who runs hot and wired, warm cooked spiced foods like ginger, soups, and roasted vegetables for someone who runs cold and sluggish.

Then there is your blood type. Peter D'Adamo, in Eat Right 4 Your Type, teaches that your ABO blood type reflects your ancestry and shapes which foods suit you. Type O, the oldest, the hunter, does best on more animal protein and vegetables and struggles with grains and dairy. Type A, the cultivator, thrives on a more plant-based, vegetarian-leaning diet and does poorly with red meat. Type B, the nomad, is the most flexible and handles dairy well, but does better easing off things like chicken and corn. Type AB, the newest, sits between A and B. It is one more lens for tuning into what your particular body wants.

Your eyes hold a map too. Iridology reads the color, fibers, and patterns of the iris to describe your constitutional type and where you tend to run strong or depleted. There are three main constitutions by iris color, shown below: the Lymphatic type has blue eyes and leans toward the lungs, lymph, and skin; the Hematogenic type has brown eyes and relates to the blood, circulation, and metabolism; and the Mixed, or Biliary, type has green, hazel, or mixed eyes and leans toward digestion and the gallbladder.

You do not need a label or a chart to begin, you need attention. Your body reports constantly on what serves it, through your energy, digestion, sleep, and mood. The frameworks are maps. Your own body is the territory, and learning to read it is the whole practice.

The Science

Everyone digests, metabolizes, and responds to food differently. Traditional medicine has organized eating around this individual nature, called your constitution, for thousands of years.

The Practice

Eastern traditions read the body by its nature, warm or cool, dry or damp, and match food to bring it back to center.

Try It Today

For one week, notice your energy and digestion after meals. Keep what leaves you light and clear, ease off what leaves you heavy or wired.
