Your Relationship With Stress

Stress is a signal, not the enemy

Stress is a highlighter. It shows you what needs to change.

Most of us are taught that stress is bad, something to numb, avoid, or push through. But stress is actually a messenger. It shows up to tell your body and mind that something needs to change, that something in your life is out of alignment with what you need. It is a highlighter drawn across the exact thing asking for your attention.

The trouble starts when you sit in the stress and let it take over and win. When you do nothing with it, it just builds, and you end up foggy, confused, anxious, and stuck. The stress was never the problem, it was the alarm. Letting it run you without ever acting on it is what wears you down.

So change your relationship with it. Stress is meant to be uncomfortable, that is the whole point, it is designed to make you so uncomfortable that you finally do something about it. In the right amount it is healthy, it gives you the fire to take action and grow. Seen that way, a spike of stress is not a threat, it is information and fuel.

The move is simple, even when it is not easy: feel it, ask what it is pointing at, and take the next action. Action is what turns stress from a weight you carry into a force that moves you forward.

The Science

Stress is your body's built in alarm that something needs your attention. In the right dose it sharpens focus, memory, and drive, researchers call that healthy zone eustress. It only turns harmful when it is constant and you never act on it or discharge it. The signal was never the problem, ignoring it is.

The Practice

Stress is not here to break you, it is here to move you. Let it point you toward the thing that needs to change.

Try It Today

Next time you feel stress rise, do not try to make it disappear. Ask it one question: what are you telling me needs to change? Then take one small action on the answer.

Read the signal

  • Where is stress showing up in your life right now?
  • What is it highlighting, what feels out of alignment or needs to change?
  • What is one action, however small, that moves you toward changing it?
